A Crash Course in Songwriting

Have you ever thought you’d like to try your hand at songwriting? Or maybe you get stuck in the process and need some help getting all the parts to work. If so, this workshop is for you!

Over a 6-week course, we will explore all the ingredients that go into making a song “work” including basic structure or layout of a song including Intro, Verse, Refrain (and/or Chorus), Hook, Bridge, Break & Outro – all the important pieces that make a finished work. We will cover the art and mechanics of pulling it all together so you can take that idea, dig deep and find your own voice.

  • Beginners welcome and you do not need to play an instrument to take this course.
  • All styles welcome and encouraged
  • The workshop will be held on Saturdays from noon to 3pm and will run from July 9th thru August 13th.
  • Ages 12 thru 18
  • Enrollment is limited to 12 students

Leading our workshop is special guest instructor, Andy Gruhin.

Andy is a professional songwriter and musical artist from Potomac, MD. He began writing music at 17 and was soon a finalist at Berklee College of Music’s annual summer songwriting competition with hardly any experience. In his freshman year at Syracuse University, Gruhin was showcasing his music at various major record labels. 2 years later while abroad in Europe, he signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV.

Gruhin has worked extensively with producers and artists from all walks of life, network and musical genre. (Affiliated acts: Periphery, Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny, Alex Young, Imad Royal, The Dangerous Summer, Panic! At The Disco, Taylor Larson, Travis Orbin, Being and many more) Gruhin has also had his music featured on National Television. (TLC, MTV)

Andy currently resides in Washington, D.C. and is the lead singer and songwriter of his band, Fight Night.
